Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a revolutionary skin restoration and wrinkle reduction process. It is commonly referred to as "the lunch time facial" because the procedure takes only minutes to perform and most people can return to work immediately. The microdermabrasion procedure uses a highly controlled spray of microscopic crystals over the surface of the skin. This action causes little or no discomfort while it gently removes the outer layer of the skin. By repeating this process over the course of several weeks or months, younger, softer, more radiant skin moves to the surface.

Before
After

Microdermabrasion is for those who have:

  • sun damaged skin
  • enlarged pores
  • oily and acne prone skin
  • acne scars
  • blackheads and whiteheads
  • age spots and superficial pigmentation
  • fine wrinkles

Before the procedure:

Ask your doctor or skin care professional to determine if you are a candidate for microdermabrasion. Together, you will determine the number and regularity of treatments best for you. You'll need to avoid Alpha-Hydroxy Acid, Glycolic Acid products and skin exfoliation scrubs for 72 hours both before and after a treatment.

What to expect on procedure day:

Your treatment will last 15-45 minutes if you're receiving it only on your face. If your treatment includes the neck and upper chest area, it may last up to an hour. Microdermabrasion does not hurt although it may sting a little around the eye area. No anesthetic is required.

During your treatment, your doctor will use a machine that delivers a precisely controlled volume of sterile micro-particles to rub off the very top skin layer. A vacuum attached to the device will remove the particles and dead skin. Initially, you may feel a mild scratching sensation as the crystals make contact with the skin. As the treatments continue, this experience compares to a deep massage.

A rehydrating toner, moisturizer and sunscreen will be applied to your skin before you leave your doctor's office.

You may experience some redness after a treatment, however this is not likely to persist more than a few hours. The sensation of having a mild windburn or sunburn will also pass after a few hours. Applying a high quality moisturizer to re-hydrate the skin at this point will help.

You'll need to avoid direct sun exposure for seven days after a treatment. Also avoid liquid foundations or pressed powder foundations for 24 hours after a treatment. Eye make-up, lipstick etc. may be applied immediately after a treatment.

Because this procedure is non-invasive and non-surgical, you may return to your normal activities immediately.

Realistic expectations:

There are typically no side effects to this procedure other than a mild redness that subsides a few hours after the procedure. It is a safe, effective procedure. The vast majority of our patients are extremely happy with their appearance after microdermabrasion, however, we cannot guarantee you will have the results you desire.
